I wrote up some instructions on how to enable the "Edit button" on your Mastodon instance, if anyone's interested.

Basically edit
1. app/javascript/mastodon/components/status_action_bar.js
2. app/javascript/mastodon/features/status/components/action_bar.js

Uncomment menu.push({ text: intl.formatMessage(messages.edit), action: this.handleEditClick });

Do a yarn run build:production and restart your Mastodon services and that should enable it!

Boosts appreciated 🔁

@wakame I can see localizing production as a major advantage, since moving manufacturing closer to your market reduces delays to market or additional transport costs.

I'm skeptical of the notion of vertical farming. My understanding is it requires even more energy than traditional farming. I think if it were profitable, we'd have done it on a large scale already. Maybe agriculture subsidies are making this less competitive?

Suppose you knew that the world was headed toward an environment of decreased globalization and supply chain integration, less food and energy security, and increased costs trading costs.

How would you profit from it?

US-UK trade deal

>As the global economy recovers from the turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic and grapples with disruptions caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the U.K. government sees the negotiation of new free trade agreements as a major part of its economic and geopolitical agenda.

>In Washington, the mood is very different. Following the 2016 presidential election, in which both candidates opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiated by the Obama administration, the free trade orthodoxy that drove U.S. trade policy for decades is no longer ascendant.

>In its place, Democrats—and some Republicans—have adopted a more judicious approach that views trade as a tool for advancing other interests, such as the workers’ rights and protection of the planet, rather than an end unto itself. During his 2020 campaign, now-U.S. President Joe Biden pledged not to agree to any new trade deals “until we’ve made major investments here at home, in our workers and our communities.”

>U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai has called free trade agreements a “very 20th-century tool” and has led the Biden administration in developing novel trade arrangements with Asian and European partners. The most prominent of these arrangements, the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) currently being negotiated with a number Asian and Pacific countries, notably does not involve market access but rather a suite of commitments touching on key sectors and standards such as digital governance, supply chains, taxation, and decarbonization.

As the US continues to pull back from maintaining the geopolitical order we established and instead focus inward, issues like bilateral trade deals with our sixth largest trading partner are proving difficult to capture our interest.

@Blakely large entities of all stripes (be they corporate, governmental, or otherwise) inevitably self-organize into a bureaucracy. Definitely not unique to socialist/communist regimes.

@onepict @derwinmcgeary thanks for your response. If I may ask, what were the main drivers in your decision to get French citizenship?

I'm actually in the process of registering for British citizenship (by descent), but not necessarily to move to the UK. Just to increase options.

@onepict @derwinmcgeary based on the analysis I've been reading/viewing, a majority voting in favor of Scottish independence seems more unlikely this time round than before, no?

@tulpa opinions differ, but I strongly feel it's not the reviewers' place to build , run, or test the code. That's the author's responsibility (along with the normal QA process). As a reviewer, I'm looking for architectural/design concerns, obvious issues, code smells, etc.

@gme agreed, but of course it's not unique to the fediverse, is it?

>Classified documents relating to nuclear weapons were among the items FBI agents sought in a search of former president Donald Trump’s Florida residence on Monday, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Damn.

U.S. Politics

@x_minus_t it's extremely disconcerting to me how little any of this seems to matter to the average person. When I talk about it to others, I can practically feel their eyes glaze over.

Open corruption at the highest levels, including literally sharing/selling information to foreign intelligence? Who cares.

Having senior campaign staff accept a meeting at your headquarters with a Russian intelligence asset, someone introduced as a Russian government official wanting to assist your campaign on behalf of Moscow? Hoax.

Illegally taking classified information to your personal residence after leaving office? It's not a big deal.

Undermining future elections and our democracy more broadly (not to mention dividing the country) by falsely claiming the election was stolen? So what.

These are just a few examples that I could think of in a couple of minutes. Nothing is real, nothing matters anymore except tribal affiliation. I don't know how we fix this.
